Why Quality and Consistency are Key

Quality team measuring metal thickness

From sourcing metal from reputable mills to processing and shipping high quality products, and everything in between, there are many crucial steps that our team goes through to produce trusted results. United Performance Metal’s Quality team plays a key role in making sure each piece of metal that we sell meets industry standards and certifications.

What Certifications of Quality Does UPM Hold?

United Performance Metals holds numerous industry and customer certifications that uphold the quality and consistency of UPM’s products. The below certifications are given based on a third-party certifying body, NSF-ISR, that comes to all UPM facilities to audit our Quality Management System.

  • AS9100 and ISO 9001 Certified
  • ISO 13485 Medical Standard (select locations)

Additionally, UPM holds a unique portfolio of OEM approvals spanning a wide range of industries. This includes customer approvals with GE Aviation to S-SPEC-1 (S-1000) and Pratt & Whitney, which has audited our process, documentation, and Quality Management System.

What Processes Does UPM's Metal Go Through to Ensure Quality and Consistency?

When material arrives at United Performance Metals, it is first unpackaged and goes through a robust inspection process. This process starts with a visual inspection where the team looks for any defects and counts the number of sheet and bar products to verify the correct amount was received. Once complete, the team checks for markings on the material to confirm them against vendor paperwork.

Once the team has verified that the product is correct, they begin sampling plans, which inspect the length, width, and thickness of the material. All sampling test reports are compared to our purchase orders, as well as industry and customer specifications, to determine conformance. This inspection allows UPM to verify that the material that we receive passes our promised quality assurance.

With the material passing the initial inspection, it is further processed to meet customer requests. UPM’s FIRSTCUT+® Processing Services, which include cutting, processing, and measuring services, work to further extend our commitment to our valued customers. Once processed, the metal goes through a final inspection before going to packaging. UPM’s high quality packaging solutions are customized to meet specific requirements and protect customer orders, preventing damage during the transit process.

Why is Consistency Important When It Comes to Metal?

Ensuring consistency gives our customers reassurance that they received the correct product that will work best for their specific application. Additionally, quality checks guarantee that UPM is sourcing high quality materials that meet quality approvals and customer specifications. United Performance Metals Quality team’s systematic inspection process is one of the many ways that UPM provides unparalleled value for our customers.
